Years ago, in college, I had to read an interesting book, THE MISMEASURE OF MAN. Written by a Harvard guy, it showed how through the centuries science has really not been so scientific. Stephen Jay Gould's vastly influential 1981 book on IQ, The Mismeasure of Man, is an odd beast since it is heavily devoted to debunking dead and often forgotten old scientists. Then read for awhile, still working on the Mismeasure of Man, but I took some time out to download a Charles de Lint novel to read next, Spirits in the Wires. It's one of his favorites, and he frequently references it in our discussions, so he suggested I check it out. Astonishing as it may seem, some developers like to commit changes to their version control system frequently to create the impression that they are hard at work. In 1981 Gould wrote the classic book The Mismeasure of Man which utterly destroyed these arguments. I would say The Mismeasurement of Man is one of the most commonly cited books on this weblog over the years (in the comments).
